What is a Fashion Tech Pack?

A tech-pack is a comprehensive packet of design details that will convey to a manufacturer how a garment is to be produced. It acts as a blueprint throughout the manufacturing process for the supplier to follow and will include all the relevant information a clothing manufacturer would need to confidently produce a garment.

The Structure and Parts of a Tech Pack

Technical Sketches:
The technical sketch is a detailed drawing of your product. Most of the time only a front sketch is needed, sometimes multiple angles of your product. The sketches need to accurately represent the design, dimensions, and proportions of the item. The technical sketch serve as a reference for manufacturers in the production process.

Bill of Materials:
The bill of materials (BOM) is a comprehensive list of all the materials needed to create your product. This includes fabrics, trims, and any components required for assembly of your garment. Each item in the BOM is listed along with its corresponding description, and specifications such as material composition.

Measurements:
Accurate measurements are crucial for achieving the desired fit and proportions of your product. Include detailed size charts and their specific measurements for each size of your garment.

Construction Details:
This section outlines the assembly process for your product. This includes information on stitching techniques, seam allowances, seam finishes, and any methods specific to your design. Clearly illustrate each step of the assembly process with written instructions and diagrams to guide manufacturers.

Packaging Instructions:
Labeling and packaging instructions dictate how your product should be branded, labeled, and packaged for retail.

Any Additional Notes:
The notes section provides an opportunity to include any supplementary information or instructions that are relevant to your product but don’t fit into other sections of the tech pack. May include specifications for fabric quality, stitching standards, colorfastness, and other performance attributes.

Is a Fashion Tech Pack necessary?

A tech-pack is absolutely necessary when approaching clothing manufacturers. The main reason being security – without a fashion tech-pack, your specification (i.e. the basis of the manufacturing agreement) isn’t clear and concise.

Think of a tech pack like a legal contract, it outlines the specific nature of the product you wish to be manufactured and provided it’s done properly, it covers all bases. If agreed upon, it is now the blueprint that the manufacturer will work towards.
